DIE EK (The I) is an Afrikaans art music collective led by Riaan le Roux, dedicated to exploring the internal landscape of the human psyche. This audio mnemonic serves as a sonic metaphor for the emergence of the self, a journey from the depths of the collective unconscious into the light of individual awareness. It was designed to be the opening breath of the group's digital presence.

The mnemonic begins with an ensemble of voices rising in velocity, a sonic representation of archetypal energy pushing upward from the hidden depths of being. That ascent is grounded by the colossal weight of basses and tuba, adding primordial scale and gravity to the climb.

The tension resolves at a single pivot point: one voice speaking the words DIE EK. It is the moment of birth, the transition from chaotic depth to the clarity of the self, consciousness arriving in the world.

The latest Release
DONKERLIED is the latest release from DIE EK, forming part of the first album's series of seven dreams, a narrative in which each composition explores a distinct dreamscape.

The lyrics draw from the poetry of D.J. Opperman, musically reimagined in a folk-inspired style. Birth and death are explored as two inseparable points of the same circle, touching on the central mystery of being human: how every life moves between these two boundaries, and how silence, rest, and transition are woven into that movement.

Atmospheric and introspective, DONKERLIED moves slowly through darkness toward a quieter place of acceptance. It is a space for the listener's own meaning.
